I was recently asked to answer the following three questions, and I had such fun in writing my responses that I thought you might want to answer them too....plus, I'm interested in hearing your responses:

1-How long have you danced, what styles?
2--How have you evolved in this thing we call tribal fusion?
3--Who are some of your teachers and influences?

here are my answers:

-How long have you danced, what styles?
I've been studying tribal since 1999. It's the only form of dance I've seriously studied, but I've taken workshops in other styles of bellydance and Indian dance.

-How have you evolved in this thing we call tribal fusion?
All the members of my dance troupe, n.o.madic tribal, were originally students of Megha Gavin, director of Devyani and partner in Tribal Pura, so our roots are in ATS. When Meg moved away in 2003, we stayed true to our ATS roots for a number of years, but after Hurricane Katrina, we really started to explore dance from a newfound perspective and what we found was no longer pure ATS, nor is it Tribal Fusion, although we continue to draw inspiration from both of these sources.

-Who are some of your teachers and influences?
My first teacher was Teresa Tomb of Rakadu Gypsy in Lexington, KY, and even though I've not had the opportunity to study with her in years, I still feel her influence and I still seek to dance with the emotional authenticity she always embodies. My second teacher, as I've already mentioned, was Meg Gavin; she's the one who made a performer out of me, and I'll always be thankful that she had such high expectations and insisted on solid technique. I've taken workshops with a good number of dancers, but the ones whom I consider my teachers are Carolena Nericcio, Amel Tafsout, and the dancers of Kassar. These dancers move me in ways I can only articulate on the dancefloor.

love.

For those who don't know, 3rd C is held in Dallas/Ft. Worth and is hosted by Urban Gypsy. It's hands down the best organized bellydance workshop event I've ever attended.

This year is especially exciting because Kassar is teaching. Aside from our immediate teachers, I think n.o.madic has drawn more inspiration from these two ladies than any other dancers.

We're going to try a crazy challenge: A class entitled 20in2: Twenty New Moves/Combos in Two Hours! Honestly, I don't know if it's doable, but we'll dance our butts off trying. We'll offer up 10 fast and 10 slow movements, all of which are made for improv and honor the roots of ATS in their strength and presentation.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.....
I would sincerely LOVE some recommendations on the above as well as anything distinctly New Orleans-y that I should see/do/eat. Pretty Please? I arrive on 9/20

I thought it'd be nice for each of us to share a story about Carolena, for with all this talk going around, some folks (maybe even the Big C herself) feel that we've forgotten that she deserves our honor and respect, for she is the teacher to whom all our lineages reach.

This idea occured to me after I wrote to Heather and shared with her the story of my first meeting with Carolena; here's the story I told:

> I first met Carolena in 2002 in TX where I
> attended a workshop, which, naturally,
> culminated in a show, which, naturally,
> culminated in an afterparty. When we walked in--
> I can't remember if Meg came to the afterparty
> or not....maybe she went back to the room to
> freshen up first?--I saw Carolena and Jesse
> sitting at a table all by themselves, so I asked
> if we could join them. They graciously said yes.
> We had drinks, and Carolena lit up a cigarette,
> which I was tickled to see. Lots of dancers came
> by the table, which in my memory was in the
> center of the room and lit from above, such that
> it seemed to be the center of the universe.
>
> Lots of dancers came by to bow at the feet of
> their guru--and lest anyone take that the wrong
> way, let me be clear: I believe in bowing at the
> feet of one's gurus in honor of them and their
> wisdom. Many offered praise for the show FC had
> put on and for the knowledge they'd shared at
> the workshop. After about 20 or so people, I
> asked Carolena how it felt to be put on so high
> a pedestal. What she said next, I'll never
> forget. She said,--and I'm quoting from memory,
> so--She said, What people say about me, the
> show, or the workshop, ultimately isn't about
> me. It's about the experience that the dance has
> given them. If I tell them that the show didn't
> go as planned or that I'm not everything they
> think, I detract from their experience. I steal
> their experience from them.
>
> She gave me cold chills. It was then and there
> that I knew that Carolena was in fact worthy of
> whatever pedestal I'd put her on, that she was a
> role model worth looking up to, and that she was
> a Teacher with a capital T.

I'd love to hear others Big C stories, too.

love.

Every other Sunday at Tarantula Arms on Decatur in the Quarter. 9ish. no cover.

This club takes its name, of course, from Tennesee Williams's _Streetcar Named Desire_. Tarantula Arms was the name of the whorehouse where Blanche had been staying before coming to New Orleans--it was her dark dirty secret...the one she wanted illuminated with candlelight only. And since _Streetcar_ was my first intro to New Orleans, you might understand why and how I'm excited about this gig.

okay, so come see us. It's a new club so we're counting on friends and family to show some support until we get the real word out. It's located up on Decatur, between House of Blues and Rotollos Pizzeria in the 200 block on the lake side of the street.

alright, I gotta run to the beach, so no time for answering other posts at the moment, but am sending my aloha across the ocean.

That's the day after Kami Liddle's workshop hosted by Indudala and the same day as the Sisters of Salome's gig at the Hookah Bar and just two days after n.o.madic's gig at the Den, so really...how more reasons do you need to make the trip? I'm especially thinking about you ladies over on the Coast, so let me here from you!!

We're just ironing out the specifics, but Tobias will definitely be helping us get a handle on our zils, and he has some great ideas about how to integrate other rhythms (other than the standard RLR) while performing standard ATS. And if you guys want, we can also get some drumming in, so let me know what you'd like and what you think we need.

And keep checking back here for the specifics (soon, soon!) regarding tuition and workshop description. What we do know right now is that the workshop will be hosted by Cresent Lotus Dance Studio, which is located in New Orleans proper and it will be in the afternoon to give those of you who may be coming from, ah, P'cola or Houston or B'ham a chance to get into town. (Of course, why you wouldn't come two days earlier to go to the Kami workshop is beyond me....).

Let's hear it for some Tobias-love.

The last work n.o.madic tribal debuted at the CAC was for DramaRama 12. This choreography,"Oya", focused on the power of water and hurricanes in the Crescent City. Months later, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated New Orleans. Now, inspired by the rebuilding of our beloved city in the wake of disaster, n.o.madic tribal dance company presents "From the Ground Up", a choreography rooted in the earth. From the Ground Up is a three part work focused on earthy and precise bellydance movements that build a solid physical foundation which ultimately grow into a crescendo of spins - putting hard work into motion and creation. From the Ground Up features original group drum solo choreography and North African music that make a lyrical statement about the power of artistic regeneration, the role of the personal in the political, and the importance of tradition in new developments.

Hope to see all you locals there, and can't wait to see all the other new dance works that will debut that evening!

You can hear a few of the songs at cdbaby.com/cd/belaharr or www.rythmpig.com (my personal website), and order the CD either place. If you like any of the sample songs and end up dancing to them, let me hear from you because I love to hear which ones people like the most.

And might I add that i hope things are getting somewhat back to normal in the N.O. I visited a couple of times several years ago - my brother lives there - and was heartbroken at what the storm did. A lot of people really did offer up prayers for everyone there.
This is for y'all to post WHERE YOU SHOP for bellydance gear AT HOME. Eg, post either under a town already listed, or start another subject with your hometown. What I'm trying to accomplish here is to compile a list of bellydance boutiques in cities so that when one goes traveling, one can refer to one place and one list and find out where to shop when in town.

So tell us about shopping at home, and give some kind of directions if you can, street name or whatever.

Until it gets totally unmanageable, memberships are under approval to reduce spamming. But I think everyone can see the tribe, so it's not really necessary to join the tribe unless you want to post.

http://www.myspace.com/nomadictribal

???
I confess, I find myspace a bit more than confusing and not good for much except promotion, which is why we did it. we're hoping to alert more New Orleanians to what we're doing at the Den, so if you have a profile over there, befriend us, and you'll get little bulletin posts with reminders about when/where we're dancing next and such. Then, maybe we can befriend your friends, and they'll get little bulletin posts, and well, you get the idea.

The last three weeks at the Den have been awfully sparsly attended. Jackie says it's always like this around this time of year, but I don't know....anyway, we need to do all we can to get some bodies in the place. it's too cold otherwise....thus, the attempt at myspace.

if you have any better ideas, we're listening.

And if you'd like to come see us dance at some place other than the Den, come to the Darkroom (on Sophie Wright) on Dec 2 from 6-9pm. They're having a photography exhibit opening, so there'll be free wine and such. Yaya!
Who'll come if we teach it that Saturday morning (say 11-1) at Krys's uptown studio on Oak St??

It'll have to be limited to less than 10 people (maybe even fewer) to fit us all in there, but it'll be fun.
Cost: $25 for two hours of non-stop instruction

If you're willing to commit yourself, shoot me an e-mail at ali@nomadictribal.com to let me know that you want a spot. Once we get at least five people who'll definitely come, we'll make it official.

Well, now that I'm *finally* going out there, we're going to have a n.o.madic duo.

Lenay and Sue and Beth (of Clandestine) are responsible to setting this whole show up, and I'm feeling touched and excited and nervous. You may remember Sue from her NOLA visit a while back. We engaged in some guerilla improv at the Den, and there are pics of it in our album here on Tribe. This Sue is also the one we got the movement The Sue from. I'm excited to get to dance with her again--and to dance with Beth for the first time.

yay. So, here are the details (from Beth a la their Clandestine Tribe.net site):

Hey all,
I'm so excited for this show. I hope you all can make it out!!

On 8/6 we're hosting an evening of belly dance at SF's historic bar, The Stud, in honor of n.o.madic tribal's Ali coming to town--let's give a warm Bay Area welcome to our New Orleans sister!

Dancers:
Red Lotus
Clandestine
Azure
n.o.madic tribal

We're also honored to have DJ Layla from Oregon coming to spin--so be prepared to shake your booty!

Doors open at 6:30; dance performances start at 7:30
$5-10 sliding scale
The Stud, 399 9th Street @ Harrison SF, 415-252-STUD
Questions? Contact me here or at clandestinebellydance (at) gmail dot com

Hugs,
Beth

Yay!
don't fear though, the other n.o.madic girls will be keeping the beat at the Dragon's Den on Fridays while I"m out in SF soaking up as much Tribal as I can.

First, a confession: I did not attend the PURE workshop or the early workshops on Sunday. Tanya's wedding and Lenay&Tish's visit took precedence over dance this weekend, but that's okay. All is yoga when done proper.

That confessed, let me tell you about the Tribal Fusion Combos workshop I *did* attend.

First, Cammi led a wonderful warmup and stretch that challenged us to find our muscles and our bandhas (and more). It felt good. I started to sweat early, which is always a good sign that the warmup is working nicely. In the warmup, Several of the movements we'd learn later were threaded throughout the warmup, ensuring that we'd know those places intimately when the time came.

The combos all involved movements with which I am familiar: Bodywaves (both directions), Umis (sometimes spelled omis), hip work (up & down, and circles), pelvic locks/releases (do these have a name?), chest lifts/drops. She strung together these movements in a short choreo so that we could become comfortable linking these moves in Cammi-esque ways.

It's always interesting to see what movements/motions each dancer finds challenging and to analyze why. Both Lenay and I (with our trad ATS training) found the swivels to the right (which were accompanied by a weight shift onto the right foot) difficult. Why? Because in ATS we rarely swivel to the right (there's no good sight line for following the lead from there). It was fun to challenge ourselves, and I'm now determined more than ever to overcome this hiccup through practice.

Aside from learning this weight shift and getting a bit of Camminfluence, I got to see lots of folks, some of whom I hadn't seen since before the storm and at least one person I've known via e-mail only. That was fun. Myra (from Biloxi) was there, as was Sydney from Lafayette, and Amy H., the new Tribal teacher in NOLA. Of course, seeing Shannon was nice, although I wished I'd gotten a chance to really speak with her. I got to say many hellos, but the goodbyes didn't happen.....everyone seemed to disappear....I think dinner was calling many.

I always look forward to workshops with Cammi, and this one was as enlightening as all past ones have been.

LOVE.

Tark called yesterday to say that if the Den passes its last inspection today at noon, they'll be open for business on Friday night starting with us at 8pm. I'll let everyone know for sure tomorrow, but if it's true, we'd love to share this experience with as many familiar faces as possible, so please tenatively clear your calendar for grand dance blessing of the Den Post-K.
