wide-eyed Bellydance tourist in N.O.

That'd be ME, later this month! I've never been there and I've always wanted to go, since I was 13 and read every Anne Rice book I could find! (commence eye-rolling).

So, I'll be visiting from Maui (anyone need anything from the islands?). Not that I'm complaing, but I do live on an isolated rock in the middle of the pacific! Whenever I get to the mainland I make a point of visiting :

Used Book stores
Thrift & Vintage stores
Indian Restaurants/shops (I NEED bindi's!)
Fabric Stores &
Anything Bellydance Related (shows, classes, stores)

I would sincerely LOVE some recommendations on the above as well as anything distinctly New Orleans-y that I should see/do/eat. Pretty Please? I arrive on 9/20

Oh, I will be coming to the Dragon's Den on 9/21 and Amy's class on 9/26. Looking forward to it!

I've been a tourist in NOLA a few times! :-) Of course there's the French Quarter and Bourbon St. Pat O'Brien's, and you have to go get beignets at Cafe du Monde at least once! There's a ghost tour in the evening that's fun to do. If you are coming with a male SO there's a WWII museum (formerly the D-Day Museum) that is fun for guys. Then there's an art museum which sometimes has special exhibits. There's a casino called Harrah's. I'm not into gambling, but I know some people are.

Is Tippatina's still open and popular? I've always wanted to go, but it's not in NOLA proper, it's somewhere on the outskirts. They're supposed to have really good music and dancing.

The locals will have to fill you in on the shops. All I know is that there's a belly dance vendor there named Kruz who's pretty good.

    Beka:

Spend a day wandering down Royal St. in the quarter, and definitely take a drive --I'll take you if you want--through the Garden District and up St. Charles. If you do this around lunch, you can eat at Nirvana, for they have a delicious Indian buffet. There's a lovely art museum in City Park. And there are lovely cemetaries all about town. Definitely stop in Kruz (corner of Barracks and Decatur in the Quarter) and Pharoah's Cave on Royal and Barracks. These are our two "bellydance" shops. We don't have a large Indian community here, and so I'm sorry to report that I buy most of my bindis at dance workshops.

There's lots of bellydance. Check out the Sisters of Salome's studio site: www.crescentlotus.com.

Mostly what you'll want to soak up is live music. Avoid Bourbon (mho) and instead make Frenchman St. your nighttime destination.

    love.

      Thanks ladies!

No boys, just myself, my Aunt and my cousin. We're hoping one of my sisters will join us over the weekend. It's a family reunion of sorts. I haven't seen this sister in over 20 years, my cousin it's been even longer.

Ali I would love to hang out with you if you have time.

Hey! I remember Kruz, they ordered some costuming from me ages ago when I was first getting started.

Ahh, no bindi's. Too bad, the girls will be dissapointed! How about fishnets? That's another thing that's hard to find here.
